March to May and September to November are the best months, with warm days and cool evenings — comfortable for walking the medina and for day trips into the Atlas. July and August regularly push past 40C (104F), which makes sightseeing outside early morning or evening genuinely unpleasant. The Merzouga dunes (Erg Chebbi) are the real thing, but they're roughly 9 hours' drive away, meaning a genuine 2-3 day round trip with an overnight or two on the road. Don't book a "Sahara day trip" from Marrakech expecting dunes — check whether the itinerary actually goes to Agafay or Merzouga before you pay.

The Moroccan dirham (MAD) is the only legal currency and it is closed — you can't buy meaningful amounts abroad, and you can't take dirhams out of the country either. Exchange rates hover around 10.8 MAD to the euro and 10 MAD to the dollar. Change money at a bank, an official bureau de change, or an ATM after you land, and keep an exchange receipt if you want to convert leftover dirhams back before you leave.

Marrakech is generally safe — violent crime against visitors is rare. The real nuisance is petty hassle: unofficial "guides" who insist a site is closed and offer to lead you somewhere else, pickpocketing in crowded souks, and prices quoted before you've agreed to anything. Agree a price before any service — taxi, porter, henna, a photo with a snake charmer — and walk away from unsolicited offers of help.

The classics: someone tells you a monument is "closed for a private event" and offers to walk you to a "better" one, usually a shop that pays them commission. Unofficial guides latch onto tourists near Jemaa el-Fna and demand payment after a few minutes of unrequested help. Snake charmers and the handlers of the Barbary macaques used for photos will demand cash the moment you point a camera at them, even if you didn't ask for a picture. Decline politely, keep walking, and book a licensed guide in advance if you want a real one.

Marrakech-Menara Airport (RAK) is about 6 km from the medina, one of the shortest airport-to-centre distances of any major destination. Bus line 19 runs directly between the airport and the main squares for a few dirhams. A taxi takes 15-20 minutes depending on traffic — agree the fare before getting in, since airport taxis rarely run the meter.

Beige "petit taxis" handle trips within the city and are supposed to run a meter, though drivers often claim it's broken, especially with tourists — agree a price upfront or insist on the meter before getting in. Beige "grand taxis" cover longer routes out of town and are typically shared, leaving only once full. Ride-hailing apps have limited coverage in Marrakech, so negotiating directly with petit taxis is still the norm.

Morocco is a Muslim country, and while Marrakech is used to tourists, modest clothing — shoulders and knees covered — is more comfortable and draws less unwanted attention, especially for women in the medina and souks. Swimwear is fine at pools and riad terraces but not while walking through town. Loose, breathable layers work best given the heat, and closed, comfortable shoes matter more than looking smart on the medina's uneven stone.

Arabic (Moroccan Darija) and Amazigh (Berber) are the everyday languages, with French widely used in business, signage and education, a legacy of the protectorate era. English is common in hotels, riads and tour operators geared toward tourists, but less so in the souks and outside the main tourist areas, where a few words of French go further than English.

It's heavily touristic and unapologetically kitsch, priced around 40-60 € per person including transfer.
